  • The ‘ADVISOR’:  our Association newsletter is published four times per year.  The Advisor gives members and their families information on diabetes management, research and the latest news on diabetes issues.

  • DIABETES DATA MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS:  The Diabetes Association (Brooks & District) is the only organization in Brooks and area to offer the Diabetes Data Management Systems.  Blood glucose readings and other stored data is transferred from the blood glucose testing monitor to the Diabetes Management Software Program.  These software programs allow persons with diabetes to study their blood glucose trends thoroughly and help fine-tune their diabetes control.

  • MALLWALKERS CLUB:  The Mallwalkers Club offers citizens of our area the opportunity to walk regularly in a controlled environment, to learn more about fitness and health, and to develop social relationships.  The “Club” is designed to promote community awareness of the values of fitness and healthy living, to encourage individuals to assume responsibility for their wellness.  The Mallwalkers Program is a joint community partnership of the Diabetes Association (Brooks & District), the Diabetes Education Centre (BHC), Shoppers Drug Mart and Cassils Centre Mall.

  • PULL TAB PROGRAM:  Monies received from the sale of the “Pull Tabs” is used to assist a child with diabetes to attend Diabetes Summer Camp in Alberta.  Collecting of the “pull tabs” keeps our community clean and free of aluminum.

  • SHARPS DISPOSAL PROGRAM:  As responsible citizens and as major users of syringes needles and lancets, personas with diabetes are concerned with protecting other from injury and in preserving the natural beauty of our nation’s environment.  The Sharps Disposal Program offers proper disposal of all medical sharps.

  • IN MEMORIAM PROGRAM:  An “In Memoriam” gift pays tribute to the memory of a relative, friend or associate by serving the living and furthers the mission of the Diabetes Association (Brooks & District).  All In Memoriam donations go directly to fund research projects in Alberta.

  • MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM:  Becoming a member of the Diabetes Association (Brooks & District) is an important step in accessing information to manage diabetes effectively.  Membership fees:  Regular member - $12.00 per year; Senior member (65 +) - $8.00 per year.

  • DIABETES CONSULTATION:  The Diabetes Association (Brooks & District) provides qualified instruction for blood glucose monitors and insulin injection pens.

  • RETAIL:  A variety of cookbooks are for sale at the Association office, 215 – 3rd St. W, Brooks

 

EDUCATION

  • FREE education publications on health and wellness for adults and youth

  • A Library of books and videos

  • Conferences, workshops and seminars

  • DIABETES AWARENESS:  Association presentations to the Diabetes Education Centre classes; diabetes information displays for the public; diabetes management days.  The Association also participates in the Brooks & District Chamber of Commerce Trade Show, Brooks Kinsmen Parade and the Brooks Library ‘Death by Chocolate’ events.

  • DIABETES EXPO:  A patient self-care management conference and health fair.  Diabetes Expo is a must see for everyone who has or knows someone with diabetes.

  • HEALTHY CHOICES PROGRAM:  A program to get people to think healthy and provide choices to make their decisions.  To educate for healthy choices which equals healthy living, which helps prevent the onset of diabetes mellitus.  To educate the general public on the increase in adult diabetes and childhood obesity.
